Free Agents – Postion Player edition

June 2020 / Thursday, November 7th, 2019

Let’s start this post off and reflect on what a World Series that was… It was the first one I was actually able to enjoy in the past three years lol. The second those Champagne bottles pop the Free agency clock begins to tick… Did you catch Gerrit Cole changing his hat??? In this post I want dive into some of the position players currently on the market.

Didi Gregorius

The Yankees recently declined his one-year $17.8 million qualifying offer. What does this mean for the Yankees in 2020? They certainly won’t be phased, they have Gleybar to take over SS and Dj Lemahieu will cover 2B. Grigorious batted .238 last season with 16 Hr’s. Grigorious did undergo Tommy John surgery last October and began the 19′ season on the IL which may be troubling to some teams. The latest rumors have discussed the Red’s being highly interested

Kole Calhoun

The Angels chose to decline the club option on Calhoun and he will receive a $1M dollar buyout as opposed to a $14M option on his contract. Calhoun who hit .232 with 33 HR’s and has been with the Angel’s for the last 10 seasons. It’s going to be strange to look into right field and not see him there. He will be a great asset to a team looking for a speedy lefty outfielder, I would be extremely surprised though if a team offered him anywhere near $14M

Yasmani Grandal

Grandal who is an eight year veteran, declined a $16 million dollar option from the Milwaukee Brewers for his 2020 contract. Grandal previously took a gamble last offseason by declining a four-year, $60 million offer from the Mets and instead accepted a one-year, $18.25 million contract from the Brewers. Grandal batted .246 with 28 HR’s this 2019 season but when it comes to catchers these days that isn’t entirely the most important stat. According to Statcast, He saved 13 extra runs from borderline called strikes. He also only had eight passed balls this 19′ season which was a known issue in the past. I’m interested to see if he’s going to take another gamble this off season. I heard the Red’s are interested in making an offer.

Anthony Rendon

I have to admit I was quite the Rendon skeptic, but after his post season performance he has become quite the hot commodity. Rendon slashed .328/.413/.590 this post season and .319/.412/.598 this past 2019 season. He has more than proved his worth and it will be interesting to see how this unfolds. Although Rendon isn’t officially a free agent I thought he was worth mentioning. He has until Nov. 14 to decide whether or not to accept the one-year, $17.8M offer from the Nationals or enter the free agent market. Rumors are flying around in regards to Rendon and the last I heard a certain team that rhymes with Odgers is highly interested.

Next week I’ll delve into some of the pitchers on the market

xoxo
